Summary

Paulo Coelho's masterpiece tells the mystical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure。 His quest will lead him to riches far different—and far more satisfying—than he ever imagined。 Santiago's journey teaches us about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, of recognizing opportunity and learning to read the omens strewn along life's path, and, most importantly, to follow our dreams。

Not the book for me。 Didn’t like the way Arabs and Muslims were portrayed (see below for some frankly strange quotes)。 There were some things about religion and Islam specifically that I could relate to in the book, but I just didn’t connect with the story and the messages it was trying to relay。 I just felt they were very simplistic and idealistic。 Basically, anyone who doesn’t follow their dreams isn’t realising their true potential。 Boring。 Not everyone can afford the luxury of leaving their Not the book for me。 Didn’t like the way Arabs and Muslims were portrayed (see below for some frankly strange quotes)。 There were some things about religion and Islam specifically that I could relate to in the book, but I just didn’t connect with the story and the messages it was trying to relay。 I just felt they were very simplistic and idealistic。 Basically, anyone who doesn’t follow their dreams isn’t realising their true potential。 Boring。 Not everyone can afford the luxury of leaving their entire family behind to go find the true meaning of life。 The book was also very male centred。 The women in the book took a backseat to allow the men to flourish, and were just seen as love interests。 They were also described as barriers to men achieving their goals e。g。 “True love never keeps a man from pursuing his destiny”。 Their life was basically just them waiting for their men to come back to them in the desert。 As though they don’t have dreams and goals of their own。 And the female love interest was described only as a treasure for Santiago to find and come back to。 His dreams always came first。 I can definitely understand why this book resonated with a lot of people and I get the message that it was trying to send, but it just fell flat for me。。。。“Arabs often appeared in the city, shopping and chanting their strange prayers several times a day。”“How strange Africa is, thought the boy。 […] In just a few hours, he had seen men walking hand in hand, women with their faces covered and priests that climbed to the tops of towers as chanted - as everyone about him went to their knees and placed their foreheads on the ground。 “A practice of infidels” he said to himself […] The infidels had an evil look about them。” 。。。more

Although the author isn't from the same culture/ religion。 I can see his research was accurate。 I asked my friend today what she learnt as she read the book 3 times: "Maktoub"。 It is the essence for believing to forsake yourself for a higher being Allah。 Although the author isn't from the same culture/ religion。 I can see his research was accurate。 I asked my friend today what she learnt as she read the book 3 times: "Maktoub"。 It is the essence for believing to forsake yourself for a higher being Allah。 。。。more

A simple book that really knocks home the idea of “self discovery”。

Loved it such a philosophical book。 It was full of wisdom that can be read several times。 It requires time to understand meaning but book is short enough and it doesn't exhaust you。 Loved it such a philosophical book。 It was full of wisdom that can be read several times。 It requires time to understand meaning but book is short enough and it doesn't exhaust you。 。。。more

Reflects a lot of indigenous understandings。 Basically a purakau thus a source of codified knowledge。 Very holistic and easy read。 Personally, I found very mentally stimulating。

I listened the Greek audiobook version of this book (BookVoice App)。 The narration was good with the exception of the boy's voice which I often found annoying。I begun listening to this book without having any information on the theme (like most of the times I'm reading a classic), so I expected more an adventure story, rather than a self-discovery one。 When I finished the story, it felt unfulfilling, like I had just listened to a long pep-talk about how we should not let obstacles get in the way I listened the Greek audiobook version of this book (BookVoice App)。 The narration was good with the exception of the boy's voice which I often found annoying。I begun listening to this book without having any information on the theme (like most of the times I'm reading a classic), so I expected more an adventure story, rather than a self-discovery one。 When I finished the story, it felt unfulfilling, like I had just listened to a long pep-talk about how we should not let obstacles get in the way of our personal dream (like the ones we often find in social media)。 I thought that maybe since it is a classic, that is where these 'inspirational quotes' were first written。 But then I realized even this advice that the book gives, may be misleading and sometimes even dangerous。 As other people have mentioned in their reviews, one should pay mind to doubts in order to grow。 However, the representation of the treasure as the personal mythos of the boy is highly symbolic, and so, I won't elaborate further on this subject。Also, there is indeed the idea that men should follow their dreams and their women should be there to support them。 I just found out that the book was published fairly recently (1988) so one cannot simply ignore the anti-feminism as if it was a classic of the 1800s。 Furthermore, the central role of blind belief of the nonsensical in many of our characters' motives is another factor which I don't particularly find appealling。 I would rather the protagonist had a purpose based on something that made sense, than because they saw it in their dream last night。Without further elaborating, this book wasn't for me, however it might be philosophically enlightening to a younger audience (trying to discover meaning)。 。。。more

This was an amazing story。 Very inspiring, spiritual and motivating。 Not to mention, some of the quotes are so relatable and touching。 I recommend it to the people who need to know that they should follow their dreams to realize the dreams!

Simple, feel good, with some good wisdom。 But some of the messages are hyper individualistic and not practical。 Finding your personal legend is great, however, it seems as though someone should abandon everything to pursue that: family, friends, community, job, etc。 Felt like a self help book without the “how to” part, and seemed contradictory: find your personal legend, but luck is going to take you there。 But those are my criticisms。 I’d rlly give it 2。5 stars。 It didn’t completely waste my ti Simple, feel good, with some good wisdom。 But some of the messages are hyper individualistic and not practical。 Finding your personal legend is great, however, it seems as though someone should abandon everything to pursue that: family, friends, community, job, etc。 Felt like a self help book without the “how to” part, and seemed contradictory: find your personal legend, but luck is going to take you there。 But those are my criticisms。 I’d rlly give it 2。5 stars。 It didn’t completely waste my time, it was heartfelt in some parts and still have good one liners, but as a philosophy for life, would not recommend。 。。。more

Oh wow, oh wow。 What a story。 Only wish the ending was slightly different but other than that。。。couldn't put this down。 Had goosebumps in a few scenes。Also this part: "The desert will give you an understanding of the world; in fact, anything on the face of the earth will do that。 You don't even have to understand the desert: all you have to do is contemplate a simple grain of sand, and you will see in it all the marvels of creation。"Reminded me of William Blake's "Auguries of Innocence": "To see Oh wow, oh wow。 What a story。 Only wish the ending was slightly different but other than that。。。couldn't put this down。 Had goosebumps in a few scenes。Also this part: "The desert will give you an understanding of the world; in fact, anything on the face of the earth will do that。 You don't even have to understand the desert: all you have to do is contemplate a simple grain of sand, and you will see in it all the marvels of creation。"Reminded me of William Blake's "Auguries of Innocence": "To see a World in a Grain of Sand / And a Heaven in a Wild Flower / Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand / And Eternity in an hour" (lines 1-4)。 。。。more

Really not what I thought it would be。 Santiago, a shepherd boy, goes in search of his treasure, his Personal Legend, (dream/love/magic/faith) only to find it where he started。 Too many God references for me, except to say, thank god this book was short。

I wasn’t reading this as a self help book。 I don’t believe in everything that was mentioned。 However I found it to be an inspirational, uplifting fable。 There are many things I took to heart and can use in my everyday life, and other things I just breezed past。 It’s a book I would like my daughter to read when she’s in high school。

Overall storyline was easy to follow, and pretty good。 Definitely follows a religious or fate storyline that leaves the audience in awe but can be criticized if one wants to take a more practical and logical approach。 Nonetheless, it's a good story and easy to follow introduction that leans towards self-help more than anything in the sense that it tries to offer a solution and option for others who may be questioning their place in life and overall placement/destiny。 Overall storyline was easy to follow, and pretty good。 Definitely follows a religious or fate storyline that leaves the audience in awe but can be criticized if one wants to take a more practical and logical approach。 Nonetheless, it's a good story and easy to follow introduction that leans towards self-help more than anything in the sense that it tries to offer a solution and option for others who may be questioning their place in life and overall placement/destiny。 。。。more
